Why Claiming Legacy exists

We are Katinka and Josua, two Germans who followed God’s call to the US to study His Word. We married within a year of meeting and became parents a year later. Our son was just over a year old when I, Josua, resigned from the military, not knowing what was ahead. One year of Bible college online, then two more on campus, in a new country, with a young family. It put our marriage through a lot.

I did what I knew: I worked harder. Building, providing, pushing, too busy to stop and ask Him what He actually wanted. It got worse, not better, until I finally stopped long enough to hear God say: “Stop!” And then: “Focus on your foundation.” I understood at once what He meant. My relationship with Him. My wife. My son.

So I let go of the striving, against every instinct I had, and something changed. Not the doing; the source of it.

A life lived the way He intended was never meant to be possible without Him.

In that season I also saw how profoundly differently the two of us think and approach life. And how much we needed a way to sit down and come into agreement, from the biggest things to the smallest. Not a plan to perform, not another list to fail at. Something to keep us intentional and guard against the drift of ordinary days.

So I sat down to figure it out. This time always with one ear open, to not shut out the Holy Spirit another time. I was not far in when God asked me, “What are you doing?” “I am focusing on my foundation, like You told me to.”

“Exactly. And now watch what I will do with that.”

What began as a helper for one marriage grew into nine books for the whole Body of Christ. Carrying the lessons we learned, the advice we heeded, and the decisions we paid for.

Without me even realizing it, God had started preparing me for this decades ago. And now that I have finally learned to listen to Him, He has begun to turn my insatiable hunger for growth, progress, and purpose outward, beyond myself and my own marriage, to bless others.
